Common problems with wood burning

Home Common problems with wood burning

Wood burning can sometimes cause some problems and difficulties. In order to ensure that your fireplace burns as beautifully as possible, we have listed the most common problems with wood burning.

There is black stain on the window of my wood fireplace. What now?

This problem can have several causes.

Cause 1: You are firing with too little wood. It is important to use enough wood, use at least the amount stated in the user manual.

Cause 2: There is not enough combustion air. Make sure that the position of the air slide is set at the point where a bright yellow flame can be seen.

Cause 3: There is too much combustion air. Probably the air slide is positioned in such a way that the primary air valve is open (to the right of the centre). As a result, the gasification of the wood goes so fast that insufficient combustion air can be supplied. Close the fire with the primary air damper and open the secondary air damper as much as possible (air slide in the middle).

Cause 4: The wood is too damp. The moisture content of wood should be between 15% and 20%. Ideally, it should be between 15% and 18%. Read more about the use of wood in the next article.

Cause 5: The air supply is (partially) blocked from the outside. Check this and remove any blockage.

The fire in my wood fireplace can not be tempered. Now what?

This problem can have several causes.

Cause 1: The chimney draught is too high. This can be solved by placing a stop plate in the stove’s drain stub. These are available from your dealer.

Cause 2: The ambient air contains a leak. This can be in the door, for example, which is usually visible by a black “wipe” on the glass. Your dealer can solve this for you.

There is white deposits on the window of my wood fireplace. What now?

The reason for this is that the fireplace is overheated. This can be solved by using less fuel and by using only primary air when lighting and possibly recharging. It is also important to use dry and clean hardwood and not softwood such as “pallet wood”. Click here for an article on what kind of wood you can use best in your stove.

There is too much smoke coming out of my wood fireplace. What now?

This problem can have several causes.

Cause 1: The chimney draught is too low. This can be solved by firing using the Swiss method. It is also important to use the minimum amount of wood as stated in the user manual.

Cause 2: There is underpressure in the chamber. In this case you should check the room for the active operation of an extractor hood, a mechanical ventilation system or HRS system.

Cause 3: There is a blockage in the chimney. Open the chimney flap, if present, and ask a chimney sweep to check for bird nests.

My wood fireplace burns very badly. What now?

This problem can have several causes.

Cause 1: The chimney draught is too high. In this case, it is advisable to use the Swiss method and make sure you use a large amount of wood. To know what is the right amount, you can look at the user manual

Cause 2: The chimney is clogged. To solve this, any chimney valve should be opened and checked for bird nests. A chimney sweep can do this for you.

Cause 3: There is a blockage in the air supply duct. In this case, check whether the method of air supply corresponds to the execution of the fire (internal vs. external output). It is also possible to check the inlet grille in the facade, as well as whether the correct rupture disk has been removed in the airbox.
