Wood fireplaces
Mankind has kept warm by a fire for ages. And for just as long, we have enjoyed gazing at the dancing flames as we dreamt away by a crackling fire. Barbas was founded in 1976 and it is the brand for wood-burning fireplaces. We are committed to sustainability and ecological responsibility. Our R&D department works non-stop on research into improving our products. The result is the ideal combustion chamber that lets the wood burn as efficiently as possible with high output and as little emission as possible.

Furthermore, the fuel – wood – is easy to obtain and creates lovely heat.

The points for your attention
What do you actually need to know about a wood fireplace? Below we have made a list of points about maintenance, output and installation of a wood fireplace.
Output
Definitely very important is the output of your wood fireplace. Make sure that the output coordinates with the space that you want to heat. If you don’t take this into account, the room may get too hot and combustion will not be optimal.
Maintenance
It is crucial that before purchasing a wood fireplace, you know how to maintain it. Here are some tips in advance. Have the chimney swept at least once a year by a certified specialist. Furthermore, we advise you to regularly brush the fireplace, to clean the combustion chamber and to clean the windows. Just as important is checking the seals and lubricating the hinges.
Installing a wood fireplace
Is there already a flue duct in your residence? Wonderful! That saves you lots of hassle. If there no flue duct, then it is essential that you have the possibility to create one that fits the wood fireplace that you have chosen. Wood fireplaces are usually the type with an open combustion system: the oxygen necessary for the burning process in the fireplace comes from the room itself. Subsequently the flue gases are exhausted via a flue duct. Here it is important that the flue duct is connected well to the fireplace.
What type of wood do you need for your wood fireplace?
What is the most important condition for the wood that you use? Make sure that it is dry! Otherwise, you will have to wait a long time before you get a good fire. Oak is the most common wood type for a fire. It is elastic, hard and easy to obtain. It might take a while before the wood burns, but once it burns, it lasts for a long time. The disadvantage of oak wood is that the play of flames is less impressive. Birch is therefore a good option: clean combustion, gives lots of heat and does not splatter. Other options are alder, ash and beech. An absolute no-go is painted, varnished or impregnated wood. These are bad for you as well as for the environment.
How do you stoke a fire?
Stoking a fire is serious business and it is certainly not always a piece of cake. In any case, what you should always ensure is sufficient air supply. It is also not a good idea to light a fire when there is no wind, because the flue gases will remain in your house. Furthermore, always allow a wood fire to die out by itself.
